France keeps stance on GM maize ban

The French government is maintaining its position on the “safeguard” clause under the EU GMO registration Directive (2001/18), allowing it to suspend the cultivation of Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant MON810 maize. France invoked the clause, which allows member states to ban EU-approved crops on health or environmental grounds, following its suspension of plantings in late 2007 ( Agrow No 535, p 11).
