A team of researchers at the University of California, Davis, and Kansas State University has identified a gene that enables resistance to the Ug99 strain of wheat stem rust ( Puccinia graminis f sp tritici ). “This discovery opens the door for biotechnological approaches to fight this devastating disease,” says project co-director Eduard Akhunov, in one of two articles on the topic published June 27 in Science magazine ( http://bit.ly/16CRVmN ). The challenge now is to identify which combination of resistance genes can deliver a more durable resistance against the disease, they say.
