BIPARTISAN AG RESEARCH BILL

Senate agriculture committee chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), a committee member, last Friday introduced bipartisan legislation with Reps. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) and Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.) that aims to help spur new agricultural research by leveraging private dollars to create charitable partnerships between universities and private entities. The Charitable Agricultural Research Act (S 1280/HR 2671), would amend the tax code to allow for the creation of new charitable, tax-exempt agricultural research organizations (AROs) similar to medical research organizations, which have been successfully supporting innovation in medical sciences since the 1950s, according to a news release issued July 12.
