Information on safety of GRAS, food contact substances lacking, paper suggests

Many of the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) determinations and food contact notifications (FCNs) sent to FDA's Office of Food Additive Safety are missing feeding trials and other toxicological research to prove that the substances being added to, or used near, food are safe, according to a new 44-page paper from the Pew Charitable Trusts, published Wednesday in the journal Reproductive Toxicology ( ).
