Update: CDC Calls Salmonella Outbreak Complex
A salmonella outbreak linked to 300 illnesses involves seven strains of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella Heidelberg and has resulted in a unusually high rate of hospitalizations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CDC also said part of its investigation was slowed because of the partial government shutdown. CDC said the outbreak has sent 42 percent of those affected to the hospital. In a typical outbreak, CDC said, roughly 20 percent of people who fall ill are hospitalized.
