Never avoiding a fight, R-CALF USA, the maverick cattlemen’s organization based in Billings, Mont., is circulating a petition asking Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to terminate all contracts between the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and the Beef Checkoff Program. R-CALF says it’s “a blatant conflict of interest” for NCBA to receive millions of dollars of federally mandated checkoff funds while simultaneously filing a lawsuit in opposition to USDA’s new country-of-origin labeling (COOL) rule. NCBA was among eight U.S. and Canadian meat groups that last week filed suit in a federal court, in Washington, D.C., to block implementation of the new COOL rule (see FCN July 12, 2013, Page 12).
