FDA views artifical transfat as no longer GRAS, estimates policy move would cost $8 billion

Food companies would dish out $8 billion the first year to comply with the US Food and Drug Administration’s preliminary decision announced at the end of last week that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), or artificial transfat, should no longer be considered Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) in processed foods due to mounting evidence of health risks.
