Farm Bill Conference Update: Some Progress Made

The four principals of the farm bill conference met for nearly 90 minutes Wednesday evening, with staff attending. Another meeting is likely this morning as a goal to reach a framework agreement by the end of this week is still in sight, according to sources. “It was a good discussion; we're not there yet,” Lucas said. Senate Ag Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow, usually upbeat, said, “We’re making progress.” Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.), whose farm bill mood is ever changing, turned to the positive side, saying he thinks a farm deal is possible yet this week. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has indicated he “needs a farm bill” to put before the full House chamber.
