Ukraine irrigation projects

Ukraine’s agrarian policy and food ministry has announced that it plans to spend half of a US$3 billion (€2.3bn) loan from China on irrigation projects. Ukraine’s loan from the Export-Import Bank of China was secured under an agricultural accord signed by the two nations in July. The deal secured Chinese agricultural investment for Ukraine in return for access to maize exports. Oleksandr Demidov, director of the ministry’s farming department, said: “There are plans to funnel $1.5 billion of China’s loan into the development of areas with additional irrigation,” the KyivPost reported. Under the programme, Ukraine’s area of irrigated land will expand by 550 000 hectares.
