Progress Being Made on Farm Bill Issues
Progress made on many farm bill issues. The four farm bill conference principals on Wednesday confirmed progress in ongoing new farm bill negotiations. “We’re not getting into specifics,” said Senate Ag Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.). “It’s what you would expect. But we narrowed differences. I think we’ve made great progress.” Stabenow said they were “nearing differences with every part of the bill.” House Ag Chairman Frank Lucas (R-Okla.), who also chairs the conference, agreed that progress was made, but that more progress was needed. “We have a good-faith effort by the principals, a good-faith effort by our brilliant staff,” Lucas said. Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) said no one was going to announce developments on anything specific — “I don’t think that would be helpful.” But lawmakers have indicated that the principal disagreements with the farm bill are over the nutrition and commodity titles.
