Cherkizovo expands operations

Cherkizovo, one of Russia’s largest meat companies, has completed the construction of three new integrated pig farms, boosting capacity in its pork division by around 25%. The company has invested more than RUB4 billion (€98m) in the three facilities, which each having the capacity to produce 12 500 tonnes of live weight pork per year. Located in the Voronezh, Lipetsk and Tambov regions, the facilities were made as integrated modules for 4 800 sows, each with separate buildings for breeding, rearing and fattening. Cherkizovo chief executive Sergei Mikhailov said the company’s pork operations now have annual production capacity of more than 180 000t live weight, adding that the number of pigs this year would exceed 1.5 millon. “Because of the difficult situation in the industry... and Russia’s entrance to the World Trade Organisation, only large agribusinesses built on advanced technologies can be competitive,” he noted.
