Russia cancels GM import ban
Russia has cancelled a temporary ban on the import of Monsanto’s genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant NK603 maize, according to the Black Sea Biotechnology Association. The ban was imposed in September following the publication of a French study claiming harmful effects to rats from exposure to the herbicide, glyphosate, and NK603 maize at levels considered safe to humans (see AE2533 25.09.12). The study was referred to the Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, which has given a clean bill of health to the maize line and rejected the research as being in violation of scientific procedure, Agrow reports. The rejection of the study by the European Food Safety Authority in November was also factored in to the decision to lift the suspension (see AE2543 04.12.12).
