Timeline Murky for Tax Overhaul
The House Ways and Means chairman on Thursday updated House Republican leaders on the progress toward comprehensive tax changes, but the measure is not ready for committee markup. Ways and Means panel Republicans will continue refining the legislation, toward consideration in 2013 or 2014. Committee Chairman Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.) and five senior committee members met with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and Republican Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Participants also included Reps. Sam Johnson (R-Texas), Kevin Brady (R-Texas), Charles Boustany (R-La.), Pat Tiberi (R-Ohio) and Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). Camp, the panel's chairman, said after the meeting that he would not make a prediction on any legislative timeline. He said panel members and Boehner “didn't really discuss” when the committee may release proposed legislation. Boehner did not mention revamping the tax code as a top legislative priority in the remainder of 2013, at a Thursday news conference.
