– US-Iraq. President Barack Obama has announced 275 US troops will be deployed to Iraq to provide security for the US Embassy in Baghdad as Sunni insurgents continue to test the nation’s security forces in its push closer to the capital. US officials say the naval presence in the Persian Gulf gives President Obama options, but the military’s ability to deploy drones for surveillance and gather reliable intelligence may be limited. Meanwhile, Iraqi government forces led by a US-trained commander lost control of another key northern Iraqi city to Sunni extremists on Monday, while the United Nations' human-rights envoy said alleged massacres in the region over the weekend "almost certainly amount to war crimes." And, a top State Department official discussed the crisis gripping Iraq with Iranian diplomats, a senior US official said, the most direct talks yet between Tehran and Washington on the issue.
