EU, Ukraine, Russia Gas Talks Falter

The latest negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian governments, which were mediated by the European Commission, failed to reach an agreement. The talks faltered after Russia insisted that the EU and its member states provide funding to help pay outstanding Ukrainian bills Russia says amount to $5.3 billion. “We have done what we can do and the EU should examine the situation and share some of the burden of paying the outstanding Ukrainian gas bills,” said Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak at a press conference held after the talks concluded. “New efforts are needed to find new sources of funding including from other EU countries that have budgets and provide aid to Ukraine.”
