EPA Expands List of Advanced Fuels Re: RFS Mandate
The EPA finalized two rules Wednesday under its Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program, expanding the list of advanced fuels that fulfill the mandate and launching a voluntary program to combat compliance fraud. The agency said compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas and electric power used as transportation fuel, all produced from certain sources of biogas, would qualify as cellulosic or advanced biofuels under the standard. The standard mandates that a percentage of renewable fuels — including a portion of advanced fuels — displace gasoline or diesel, though EPA missed a June deadline to finalize renewable fuel standard volumes for 2014. “This action has the potential to provide notable volumes of cellulosic biofuel to the marketplace,” EPA spokeswoman Liz Purchia said in a statement.
