House to Clash Today on Equipment Depreciation Tax Break Debate

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) expects a large number of Democrats to vote against a bill (HR 4718) that would make permanent the 50 percent bonus depreciation rules for businesses that place new property in service in a tax year. The measure, estimated to cost $287 billion over 10 years, would solidify a tax break that allows businesses to immediately write off half the cost of qualified equipment and other assets they purchase, rather than depreciating the cost over time.
