Editor’s View: Some good news
The New Year seems to be off to a very hopeful start, with signs of growth in the economy and even reports of surpluses in some state budgets. Who would have thought? Federal food regulatory authorities fared better than some others in budget negotiations. The FDA looks set for a fiscal year 2014 budget that’s $91 million higher than it received for FY 2013 and it will have an extra $53 million to spend on implementing the Food Safety Modernization Act (see story, Page 1). At USDA, the Food Safety and Inspection Service is in line for a $33 million increase and the Agricultural Research Service will see an extra $105 million.
