Editor’s View: Justice served
The guilty plea by Austin “Jack” DeCoster and his son Peter, and the fine of $6.8 million to be paid by Quality Egg LLC, which is owned by a DeCoster family trust, should serve as a warning to others that federal prosecutors will diligently pursue individuals who distribute adulterated food. The egg producers pleaded guilty to one federal misdemeanor count each and they will each pay personal fines of $100,000. They may also face one-year prison terms.
