Novel food approval sought for synthetic version of chilli pepper extract

A Japanese company has applied to the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) for approval to market a synthetic version of a substance that occurs naturally in chilli peppers. The company, Ajinomoto, wants to use the substance – dihydrocapsiate – in food supplements because, the company says, it can improve energy expenditure and fat oxidation and play a role in weight management.
