European Commission Targets US Trade Barriers in TTIP Negotiations

The European Commission is targeting US trade barriers in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations that the EU executive body said unfairly discriminate against European small and medium-sized companies, including in the food and drink sector as well those involving electrical equipment, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and textiles. “Small and medium-sized enterprises are disproportionately affected by trade barriers,” the commission said in a statement. “Since they have fewer human and financial resources to overcome than those of larger firms, the cost for SMEs to export or invest outside the EU often outweighs the gains. Just getting information about regulatory and other requirements in export markets is already a major challenge for smaller firms.”
