Success may not taste so sweet

The nation’s long struggle to get to grips with its obesity epidemic took a turn for the better this week with the news that Coca-Cola, Pepsi Co., and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group will reduce calories in their sodas by 20% over the next 10 years and will promote smaller portions. Even those skeptics who believe the major soda producers could have committed to stronger measures welcomed the news. But consumer advocates made their own pledge this week – to continue campaigning for a proposed California law to require safety warnings on sugary drinks, which they hope will inspire similar legislation nationwide.
