Waxman Won't Run for Reelection
Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), 74, who chaired House Energy and Commerce when the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was written, announced that he is retiring. In his announcement, he included food safety among a long list of issues he was proud of addressing during his long career. “To protect consumers, I wrote three major food safety laws. The first law created the nutrition labels that millions of families rely on every day. The second removed dangerous pesticides from fruits and vegetables. And the third will help make imported food safer," he said. Energy and Commerce has jurisdiction over FDA and EPA. Waxman has been ranking member since Republicans took over the House in 2011.
