FDA may weigh 'robust' third-party audit program in setting U.S. inspection priorities

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) allows importers to rely on third-party audits in demonstrating the safety of certain food imports, and FDA is now eyeing whether to take into account a U.S. company’s third-party audits when deciding the length and frequency of inspections here, said Roberta Wagner, compliance director at FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, at a meeting Monday (Nov. 17).
