Those Dietary Guidelines
Stakeholders were waiting impatiently for the release of the new Dietary Guidelines before the holidays. But the latest word from HHS is that they won’t be unveiled until January. This seems a smart alternative to issuing advice just in time for the festive season, when it is most likely to be ignored. Hopefully, 2016 will bring much positive attention to the guidelines, in place of the bickering that surrounded the recommendations of the advisory panel this year. If the new Guidelines draw even half as much attention from consumers as the expert advice gets from the regulated community, they might have a bigger impact on obesity and public health. Developing sound advice is one thing -- getting the message across is the real challenge.
