ITC Holds Hearing on Whether Sugar Pacts With Mexico Comply With Statutory Provisions
Two US sugar refiners—Imperial Sugar Co. and AmCane Sugar LLC —continued their opposition to agreements suspending trade cases on sugar imports from Mexico but a Mexican government official and sugar producers from Mexico and the US argued that the suspension agreements were working as intended. The observers made their arguments before the International Trade Commission (ITC), which is considering whether the injurious effect of the subject merchandise is eliminated completely by the agreements. If the ITC reaches negative determinations, the suspended antidumping and countervailing duty investigations would continue. The ITC has never considered a similar request. The ITC is scheduled to issue its determinations in the reviews on March 24. The six-member agency will hold a public vote sometime in advance of that, but a date has not yet been confirmed.
