UK’s only gin to lose EU protected status

Plymouth Gin, the only gin in the UK with European protected geographical indication (GI) status, is set to lose that status in February. French owner Pernod Ricard has said it does not intend to reapply for GI status for the 600-year-old drink by the February deadline. Explaining its rationale, Pernod Ricard told the local newspaper, the Plymouth Herald,  that the company could “introduce the gin to more people” without GI status.
