Moves to limit antibiotic use build momentum

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association said it supports the new FDA rule that expands the Veterinary Feed Directive but plans to submit detailed comments to the agency after reviewing the 102-page document. Consumer advocacy groups remain concerned that the new regulatory action and the significant voluntary initiatives by poultry firms will not prevent the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria if beef, pork and turkey producers fail to show the same enthusiasm for change.
