Trans fat labelling ‘loophole’ needs to be addressed, says EWG

Even if the Food and Drug Administration goes ahead with its plan to revoke the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status of partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) – the main source of trans fat in the US diet - the Environmental Working Group (EWG) fears the agency may leave a significant labelling “loophole” that allows food processors to round off less than half a gram of trans fat per serving to zero, Food Chemical News reports.
