Brexit raises hopes for end to slaughter without stunning

In the run-up to the general election in the UK, on June 8, animal welfare group the RSPCA is calling on the next government to bring in legislation to ban the slaughter of animals without prior stunning along with the compulsory labelling of production methods. Welfare groups in Belgium recently made legislative progress when the region of Flanders agreed to ban the practice by 2019. Hopes are higher for improved legislation in the UK because of the country’s planned departure in two years time from the European Union.
