Deliberate release of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

Core legislative framework: Directive 2001/18/EC

Directive 2001/18/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 March 2001 deals with the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The Directive constitutes a legislative framework on the deliberate release of GMOs into the environment, which includes the placing thereof on the market, in accordance with the precautionary principle. Efficiency and transparency of the authorisation procedures are sought, supplemented by the establishment of a common methodology for risk assessment and a safety mechanism. The Directive also introduces mandatory public consultation and GMO labelling.
