EU court gives opinion on Aldi’s use of the word “Champagner”

A five-year legal battle between German supermarket chain Aldi and French wine producers over the 2012 sale of Aldi’s product “Champanger sorbet” was the subject of an opinion this week handed down by the European Court of Justice (ECJ).  ECJ Advocate General Manuel Campos Sánchez-Bordona said that, in his opinion, Aldi may be hard pressed to win the case which revolves around the use of a protected name.
