Animal welfare campaigners have sent an open letter to the Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen calling on her to ban cages in farming after she takes up office on November 1, after a European Citizen’s Initiative (ECI) petition gathered 1.6 million signatures EU wide, hitting the minimum thresholds in a record-breaking 21 member states.
