EU process to re-authorise glyphosate starts shortly, farmers look for alternatives

The EU process to re-authorise glyphosate is a few weeks away and farmers are scrambling to establish practices that are not dependent on the herbicide. Meanwhile, Thailand looks set to be the latest country to ban glyphosate outright, along with other agrochemicals.

Glyphosate’s five-year authorisation in the EU ends in December 2022 but the process of re-authorisation actually starts on December 15, 2019. This is because companies wishing to maintain approval of glyphosate need to submit an application for renewal three years before the authorisation’s expiry.
