Agriculture gets protection under UK’s “Global Tariff” scheme for January 2021

New tariff, designed to replace the EU’s Common External Tariff, will be simpler and easier to use, the government says.

The UK Government has today unveiled a post-Brexit trade regime called the “UK Global Tariff” (UKGT) which foresees 60% of trade coming into the UK being tariff-free on WTO terms or through existing preferential access from January 2021. However, the government stressed that it would maintain tariffs on agricultural products such as lamb, beef, and poultry to protect domestic producers.
